In order, the 12 New Year zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Cat, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

We will start with the story to explain why we have the present order of our zodiac animals. The story goes that a race was organized by the Jade Emperor - one of the most important gods in traditional Asia religion - who invited all the animals in the world to take part.

Twelve species turned up at the start line: a pig, dog, rooster, monkey, sheep, horse, snake, dragon, cat, tiger, ox and rat.

The course included a huge river that every creature, large or small, had to cross over. The exhausted Rat used its cunning to navigate the water by persuading the kindly Ox to let it sit on its head as it crossed. Rather than say thank you on the other side, the Rat dashed the finish with the Ox not far behind. That’s why the Rat is the first creature in the cycle, followed by the Ox. The other 10 are ordered according to how they fared in the race. The Pig is the last one because he stopped for a snack and a nap en route. The Emperor had almost given up on it but was happy to assign it the final space in the zodiac.

The innocent Ox helped the Rat to cross over the large river
