It has been two months.

The weather is getting cold these days. It's winter.

Enjoying the cold lets us miss the hot summer much. At present, we can imagine that we're drinking watermelon mocktails on the sunny beach.

Watermelon: It's a perfect sweet snack for the hottest of summer days. On August 3 every year, we celebrate this ancient berry in a feast of juicy deliciousness—otherwise known as National Watermelon Day.

To celebrate the day, The Fackin' English Zone wanted to share five interesting facts about this yummy fruit!

1. Watermelon is named after "water" for a reason.

Did you know that watermelon is 92% water? No wonder It's so refreshing and so "water"! This fruit has even been called "Bottled Water Nature's Way."

 

2. Watermelon is both a fruit and a vegetable

Watermelons cross all produce boundaries. To be precise, they are fruit (a berry) because they contain seeds to create more plants. But they are also a vegetable because they are planted from seeds and harvested like other vegetables. Watermelons are a member of the gourd family, meaning they're related to squash, cucumbers, and pumpkins. For kidding, watermelons are citizens of 2 different nationalities. 

 

3. Watermelons - Eat a lot, but not gain weight.

OMG, is it your favorite? Are you on a diet?

You can eat tons of watermelon—completely guilt-free

Not to worry! Watermelons are 92% water, so you can not only dig in without feeling guilty—but you can also stay hydrated on hot summer days. Stay fresh, stay slim!

 

4. History of National Watermelon Day

Watermelons have existed for at least 5,000 years.

People have been digging into this tasty, juicy fruit for millennia, and it all started in Ancient Egypt. We believe that watermelon cultivation began in the Nile Valley as early as the second millennium B.C. Watermelon seeds were even found watermelon seeds in King Tut's tomb!

 

The word "watermelon" first made its entrance into the English dictionary in 1615.

 

The creator of National Watermelon Day is a mystery.

 

Search stats on Google Trends show that there have been searches for "National Watermelon Day" as far back as 2004, but interest in the holiday began to spike in 2009. Since then, searches for the holiday on August 3 have jumped rapidly. Interest in the holiday over time has only grown.

 

5. Enjoying National Watermelon Day in many ways

Yes, there's nothing better than relaxation is joining a party.

To get your watermelon party started, here are a few fun ways to spend this refreshing day:

 

- Make a vodka watermelon

Watermelons are mostly made of water. But what if you replaced some of that water with vodka? Organize a boozy celebration with your friends by cutting a hole in a watermelon, inserting a funnel, and pouring in some vodka. The rest is... Well, you probably won't remember the rest.

 

- Create a watermelon sculpture

It's no surprise watermelons are in the same family as the pumpkin — you can carve them, too! Unleash your creativity by cutting a watermelon rose, a watermelon shark, or a watermelon basket. The options are endless.

 

- Play a game of Suikawari (Watermelon Splitting)

The Japanese have watermelon splitting down to an art. In the game of Suikawari (similar to a pinata, but without the candy and paper mache), players are blindfolded, spun around three times, and given a chance to crack open a watermelon with a wooden stick. But instead of candy, you get watermelon guts in your face.
