Why are there lakes in the mountains and plateaus?

Ponds and lakes in the delta is a very common thing. But why are there lakes and ponds in the mountains and plateaus? - Let's The Fackin' English explain it.

TIBETAN PLATEAU - THE ROOF OF THE WORLD

As we all know, the largest plateau in China is the Tibetan Plateau, with 4000-5000 meters above sea level, but there are many lakes and ponds. According to some statistics, the area of lakes and ponds here is about 30.974 square kilometers, accounting for 37.2% of the total area of lakes and ponds in China.

In addition, there are many lakes in the vast Inner Mongolian highlands. What is even more special is that there are lakes on the high mountain peaks. For example, Paektu mountain in Jilin province is 2,200 meters high above sea level, but on the top of the mountain, there is still have a "Heaven Pool" 373 meters depth, with an area of up to 9.3 square kilometers.

WHY ARE THERE STILL HAVE LAKES AND PONDS IN THE MOUNTAINS AND PLATEAUS?

Why are there still have ponds and lakes at such high-altitude places?

To explain it, the main reason is there are depressions or erosion by glaciers in those places. Many ponds in Tibetan Plateau are mostly formed during the movement of the Earth's crust, in addition to the influence of active glaciers. About 200-300 thousand years ago, Tibetan Plateau had several active glaciers. It is like a plow that digs deep into the ground to form a lowland to contain water. Later on, due to the warming climate, glaciers are gradually melted and that amount of water would pour into these lowlands and create ponds like nowadays.

As for the Inner Mongolia highlands of China, due to the dry climate, the strong wind blew the sand, It has been gradually exposed the underground water, from which ponds were formed. Even, there are places initially due to volcanic eruptions, then the crater erupts, then the crater accumulates water, gradually forming ponds and lakes.

There are many ponds on Mount Tai that were formed because initially the pipe was clogged, the river could not flow down, accumulated for a long time, and then it becomes ponds.

CONCLUSION

To sum up, there are many ponds and lakes in the mountains and plateaus because of the depression or erosion by glaciers in those places. We hope that this article will give you a piece of useful information about our nature.
